ALPENVEREIN-AKADEMIE COURSES FOR AAC(UK) TOUR LEADERS
These leadership courses are organised for English speaking participants by the Alpenverein-Akademie, which is based at the Alpenvereinshaus, Innsbruck. Details of these English-speaking courses can be found on the following links:

Details of the different types of Tour leader courses are outlined below, together with the application process for each. Participants must be 2021 members of the AAC(UK) and have been members in 2020 and/or 2019. They must also be at least 16 years old. If you are approved for any of these courses, the course costs will be met by the Alpenverein-Akademie and the AAC(UK). You must pay your own travel costs to Austria and any incidental costs and provide any equipment required. For more information about the courses, click on the course titles above. Choose a course and click on ‘Details’. The course content can be found under the tab ‘Inhalte’ whilst the skills and experience required can be found under the tab ‘Voraussetzungen’.

GetReady Courses for Aspiring AAC(UK) Tour Leaders
GetReady Courses are preparation courses organised by the Alpenverein-Akademie for those who want to organise and lead tours on a voluntary basis. These are not assessment courses, but prepare candidates for the skills needed for the Übungsleiter courses. Those who successfully complete the course are expected go on an Übungsleiter course within 2 years of course completion.

February 3 – 7: GetReady Ski Touring, Lizum 1600, Axams – CANCELLED
This Get Ready training prepares experienced ski tourers for the Übungsleiter Ski Touring. 6 places.
Feburary 10 – 14: GetReady Snowshoe, Almi’s Berghotel, Obernberg – CANCELLED
This Get Ready training prepares experienced snow-shoers for the Übungsleiter Snowshoe. 6 places.
Übungsleiter Assessment Courses for AAC(UK) Tour Leaders
Übungsleiter Courses are assessment courses organised by the Alpenverein-Akademie for those who want to organise and lead tours on a voluntary basis. The emphasis is on refining and assessing the skill sets that candidates already have, with a particular focus on leadership and safety. This is particularly important for the Skihochtouren and Hochtouren awards, both of which require competence in rope techniques. Candidates are expected to have plenty of relevant Alpine mountain experience. Those who successfully complete the course are expected to lead a tour for AAC(UK) members in Austria within 2 years of course completion.

February 24 – 28: Übungsleiter Ski Touring, Almi’s Berghotel, Obernberg – CANCELLED
This covers minimizing risk when guiding a ski touring group, correct usage of the ‘stop or go’ strategy and the order of actions in case of an avalanche accident. 6 places.
April 1 – 5: Übungsleiter Ski Hochtouren, Jamtal Hütte, Silvretta – FULL
In this training, certified Übungsleiter Ski Touring focus on the necessary rope and rescue techniques for glacier travel at high altitudes. 5 places.
June 16 – 20: Übungsleiter Bergwandern (Trekking), Almi’s Berghotel, Obernberg
For those interested in leading walking tours. Training covering how to familiarise groups with topics like surefootedness, balance and fitness in a systematic way, along with first aid. 8 places.
June 27 – July 2: Übungsleiter Hochtouren, Warnsdorfer Hütte, Krimml
Training covering the topic of high altitude mountaineering, focusing on leading as well as rope and rescue techniques. 5 places.
September 13 – 18: Übungsleiter Mountain Bike, JUFA Steinach, Steinach am Brenner
For those interested in leading mountain bike tours. You will learn to plan tours safely and in an environment-friendly way. Riding techniques and equipment are also focal points of this course. 6 places
Update courses for AAC(UK) Tour leaders
Update courses are organised by the Alpenverein-Akademie and are designed for those with an Übunglsleiter qualification, which needs to be updated every 4 years. Those who successfully complete the course should lead a tour for the AAC(UK) within 2 years of course completion.

March 25 – 28: Update Ski Touring, (Hut to Hut) Wattens
The masterclass in ski touring which challenges you physically and mentally. 6 places
June 24 – 27: Update Hochtouren, (Hut to Hut) Vent, Ötztal
A high level training for ambitious alpinists. 5 places.
July 1 – 4: Update Bergwandern, (Hut to Hut) Hochzirl, near Innsbruck
The course refreshes knowhow in a mountain walking context. 6 places.
