Regulations for Alpenverein Category I and II Huts

As at 01.01.08
adopted by the OeAV Hauptversammlung, Bad Hofgastein, 20 October 2007
DAV Hauptversammlung, Fürth, 09/10 November 2007 and
AVS Hauptversammlung, 17 November 2007

Preamble:

The Alpenvereine (Alpine Associations) AVS DAV, OeAV, provide, sometimes under very difficult conditions, about 550 category I and II mountain huts which offer all mountaineers and mountain walkers shelter and accommodation, and catering so long as the huts are manned. The furnishings and fittings are mostly simple and original in character. Essentially, Alpenverein members support the upkeep of the huts through their subscriptions and therefore enjoy benefits in comparison with non-members. This also applies to the members of other alpine clubs that have a reciprocal rights agreement with the AVS, DAV and OeAV. The following hut rules apply to all hut guests and define their rights and obligations. Observance of the rules should ensure successful communal living and safety (e.g. fire protection). In addition to this the statutory regulations not mentioned here apply. The Alpenvereine also run some Mountain Inns (Category Ill huts) to which the regulations do not apply except that members and those with reciprocal rights are entitled to a reduced bed night tariff (according to the Schedule of Tariffs) and priority advance booking for bed places.

1. Registration and Membership Cards

1.1 All overnight guests must sign in the hut book on arrival and comply with the registration requirements.

1.2 In order to make it easier to find casualties and missing people, it is recommended that all hut guests give the destination of their moun¬tain tour and their mobile telephone numbers in the hut book.

1.3 The privileges and reductions in accordance with the Schedule of Tariffs apply only to members and those with reciprocal rights who have valid membership cards.

2. Entitlement to Sleeping Places

2.1 The hut guardians may accept pre-bookings up to a maximum of 75% of the sleeping places. It is permissible to levy a deposit, the amount to be set by agreement between the section and the hut guardians in accordance with the Schedule of Tariffs.

2.2 The following have prior claim on sleeping places before all the hut guests:
• Sick or injured people who cannot be expected to descend or be brought down to the valley.
• Members of rescue teams on duty
2.3 Notlager (emergency accommodation) can only be assigned when all the (normal) sleeping places are filled.

2.4 The use of a sleeping bag is compulsory in all sleeping places.

3. Tariffs

3.1 The Hut Tariffs will be set by the section in line with the Schedule of Tariffs and displayed in the hut.

3.2 A receipt, specified by the section that owns the hut, must be given in return for payment of each overnight tariff. This receipt is also valid as confirmation for the baggage insurance.

3.3 Overcrowding does not justify a tariff reduction.

3.4 The members of the hut owning section must not be allowed any additional privileges in comparison with other Alpenverein members.

4 . Catering

4.1 Between at least 12.00hours and 20.00hours a minimum of one warm meal must be offered. Members and those with reciprocal rights must be able to buy at least one ‘Bergsteigeressen’ (mountaineers meal) at a 20% reduction, in line with the Schedule of Tariffs.
There must be an alcohol-free drink offered at a price at least 40% less than the same quantity of beer.
The hut guardians will provide breakfast and Teewasser (hot water) at a time that suits local mountaineering needs.

4.2 Self catering is not allowed. An exception is made for members and those with reciprocal rights, who however, if they don't consume anything (from the hut), pay a fee for the use of the hut facilities in accordance with the Schedule of Tariffs. Non members have no right to self cater. In general the consumption of self supplied alcoholic drinks is not permitted.

4.3 Self catering areas, if available, are only for the use of members. A fee must be paid for their use and also for fuel in accordance with the Schedule of Tariffs.

5. Provisions for Rescue

5.1 For every hut the section must put in place suitable and functional rescue provisions. The hut guardians are responsible for the completeness and functionality of the rescue provisions.

6. Behaviour in the Hut and in its Vicinity

6.1 Every visitor has a responsibility to behave considerately so that they do not disturb other people. The hut and its surroundings are to be kept clean, and all guests should take their own rubbish back to the waste disposal facilities in the valley in order to protect the mountain environment.

6.2 Silence should normally prevail in the hut from 22.00hours to 06.00hours. The hut guardians can, with the agreement of the section, allow a later start to Hüttenruhe (hut quiet or lights out), however this must not be later than 24.00hours. The actual time of Hüttenruhe should be clearly displayed. Early risers must behave such that the Hüttenruhe is not disturbed.

6.3 The playing of musical instruments is only allowed with the hut guardians' permission. Musical performances for which an entry fee is charged are absolutely not allowed.

6.4 Radios, Televisions and Music players may not be used in the day areas, in the sleeping areas, or anywhere on the hut premises.
The exception is the use of audio equipment with headphones for the reception of Weather and Avalanche forecasts outside Hüttenruhe hours.
The guardians can allow exceptions for certain isolated areas if they can guarantee that the guests in the rest of the hut will not be disturbed.

6.5 Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the hut.

6.6 In the sleeping area neither cooking nor eating is allowed; mountain boots and ski boots may not be worn. Using naked flames (candles, gas cookers etc) is not permitted.

6.7 Due to limited space seating places in the guest area cannot be reserved in advance; consideration is to be shown to those who are waiting.

6.8 Accommodation for animals must in every case be cleared in advance with the hut guardians. Animals must not be taken into the sleeping areas, or into the kitchens.

6.9 Those responsible for any careless or deliberate damage to the hut or its furnishings and fittings must bear the cost. The behaviour of children is the responsibility of the parents or the people accompanying them.

7. Supervision, Complaints

7.1 The hut guardians implement the hut regulations on behalf of the executive committee of the hut owning section.

7.2 Anyone who does not observe the hut regulations can be asked to leave the hut.

7.3 Objections and complaints should be dealt with on the spot. If that is not possible they can be addressed in writing to the section that owns the hut. The complainant can appeal against their decision, to the Präsidium of the Hauptverein, if they think the section has infringed the rules and regulations of the Alpenverein.

8. Finally

A copy of these hut regulations must be kept in every hut and must be available on request for inspection by any guest.
An extract with the most important regulations of concern to the hut guests must be displayed in a prominent place.

There is also a downloadable pdf version of this information
